also! fresh & hot off the press:
hemlock and the Case For Daily Miracles by Shea Roney at The Ugly Hug
“Having done the classic layered questioning before in a past interview with hemlock, I wanted to try something new this time around. Only preparing one question, what followed became a stream of consciousness, retelling the story of not only how Amen! came to be, but how Chauffe’s patient and stunning observational process creates a clear focus of the artistry and bonds that connect their world.”
a bastion of intentionality in the music writing landscape, Shea recently gifted me an honor of an interview, during which he asked only the singular question:
What defines a miracle to you in your life?
even just the thoughtfulness of that question made me cry, which leaves Shea and me 2/2 on both having tears fall during our interviews.
you can read the long and winding answer here, in this piece that also celebrates the 100th Ugly Hug post. they are doing truly good work. long live.
and here’s the most recent episode of my radio show, POTHOLE HOTLINE
aside from a small PORTAL REPORT segment (where i ask friends to tell me what they see out their window as a means of bridging the gap of distance), it’s entirely made up of a selection of songs from this comp by maya bon, raquel denis, and andy moholt called ‘Musicians for a Free Palestine’ - it’s the cost of an eSIM, and all the funds go towards purchasing them for people in gaza.
nice to type that out here without having to use a bunch of sp3c!@l ch@r@cters to fight the instagram algorithm and its censorship and its shadowbanning etc etc
uh oh getting on this soapbox again for a sec
my own account is currently being threatened with a 90 day ban of use for posting alleged “false information” about the recent nuseirat massacre in palestine
feels like a slap in the face, an intentional silencing, an on the nose “shut up or good luck”
having a reckoning with the fact that a 90 day instagram ban for me whilst on the permatour i’m on would directly derail me from being able to continue to self-book shows, to share addresses with attendees, to reach out to many bands to share bills with, and even from being able to find places to sleep
this is an utter dependency that not only affects my livelihood, but directly impacts the meeting of my basic needs (i.e. a roof over my head whilst on the road indefinitely)
it hurts deep to have our community tools weaponized against us, beyond recognition
what i mean is, i won’t shut up.
what i mean is, i’m glad you’re here, away from there, at least in this moment
what i mean is, i am struggling these days to believe in the imperative future that i want all of us to inhabit… but i do. i do!
what i mean, most of all, is FREE PALESTINE
other quick things:
went to kerrville folk fest for the first time, and it did change me for the better, i think. feels good to write a song in a tent at sunrise. feels good to hear other folks’ songs in the round all night. thanks g for letting me sing with you at a late night sadurn set. thanks Lindsey (
) for encouraging me to go, and being a (if not the) point of recognition for almost everyone i met.saw adrianne lenker on a little bit of shrooms and cried and cried and unexpectedly got rockognized thrice in the one night, what a thrill
this one’s pretty niche but save yourself the trouble and dont get the “matcha cream soda” flavor of GT’s alive mushroom elixir bevvie unless u reeeeally like hubba bubba bubble gum, cuz thats what it tastes like. spitting image.
i love a bed diagonally oriented in a bedroom corner
i watched The Matrix Reloaded last night for the first time and was totally enthralled lol it’s so good, i only watch one movie every 5 months or so and when i do it most always blows my mind
hi mom, if you’re reading this, please stop sending me propaganda links. it makes my heart achey at best. xo
perhaps most importantly, two snails in love in a flower covered in raindrops in new orleans
a couple of hemlock dates further in the future but still reachable with a reasonably sized arm:
7/19: River & Sky festival in Fisher’s Paradise in Canada (special because the first real deal tour i ever went on was to this fest with Little Mazarn in 2019, and again last year)
8/9-8/10: Fledge Fest in tunbridge, VT
much more soon, predictably, when all the details are ironed out
closing with another anonymous hope, this one from the archive:
solidarity, and so much love,
C
Thanks for sharing all this. You always have a home wherever I am just send an owl I’ll come find you
I let the computer-generated voice read this to me and I listened like it was a podcast. I'm glad this platform doesn't censor you the way instagram does 🤍
