caught in the storm
"what a miracle to keep going!" - march, april, may. new music, a trinity of tours, and more.
time passes, i am in texas.
i am typing from under my friend lin’s first quilt. a prized possession. it hugs me when they are too far to, all the way in michigan. a blessing.
went out for a nightwalk for the first time in a week after catching the flu in the middle of smashby, n got caught in tonight’s TX thunderstorm. big sloppy raindrop kisses on my cheeks n collarbones. drenched to the bone. drenched thru my boots. it’s what i needed, apparently, to catch, to be caught.
new music next tuesday, 3/26. a single. a song called “bones” - one of six recorded in silsbee, tx in december at Lazybones, with a band of friends. a band of heroes. a field of mules and quarterhorses. the track wears its heartbreak on its sleeve, like it should.
the rest of the album - ‘amen!’ - comes out 4/12 via Double Yolk Record House, which means it will be flying out from under the wing of one of my musical heroes. thx hannah.
and honestly? all heroes on this album. thx lindsey, kyle, tommy, eric, hannah.
as far as i’m concerned, it is a miracle. the record, i mean.
i am moved and honored by its existence - it is a culmination of many gifts.
i am moved and honored to offer it up soon, as a prayer.
here is the perfect album cover painting by another hero, Church Goin Mule:
and bookending the timeline of this release are two tours, back to back. a bogo. an ode to the south, or a couple. march 26 thru april 16. one with terri, one with laith. an eclipse in the middle. here’s what it looks like:
as far as i’m concerned, these are all album release shows. i will have CDs in hand (cool!), and heart wide open, per usual.
and the tour duo turns into a tour holy trinity when you add in the Little Mazarn journey that immediately follows, filling out what was to be left of april’s southern saga, and completing a coast-to-coast month-long quest. april 19 thru april 27.
rewind: heads up! ‘talk soon’ double LP VINYL pre-order was announced on 3/11, two years to the date of its original release. all gratitude to Ghost Mountain Records - baby’s first vinyl! you can scoop one here - they’ll ship in may. huzzah. here’s a mock-up:
celebrated the big news with the better-late-than-never drop of the new old music video for “garbage truck,” which premiered on Ugly Hug, along with some thoughtful words from Shea:
directed & edited by: Carolina Chauffe
filmed by: Daniel Joseph, Reed Everette, Carolina Chauffe
thank you to Flowers for Dreams for the blossoms, Griffin for the camera borrow, Reed & Daniel for being down to follow me around town hunting garbage trucks for a couple of days, Chicago DSS employees, and my golden bike
this is the most twee thing i’ll ever make
(footage from Nov 2021, finished March 2024)
fast-forward: for the first half of may i will be in chicago and very delicate / tender / fragile. i will want to hang out, but i probably will not. i will, though, jump in the lake and eat joong boo kimchi dumplings. see you there? the rest of the agenda:
i will be moving the rest of my belongings out of a home that was mine in a recent past life full of love! left that nest. emotional! left lots of feathers and fluff behind. logistically daunting. hopefully cathartic, when it’s all packed up and/or let go of and the time finally comes to say,
“bye bye harding ave, thanks for holding me, in your complicated way.”
i will be working on mixing (or, really, listening while jack mixes and i’m stubborn about it) the rest of an album that we recorded there last fall, in two days. band of my dreams come true - precious andy & billy & jackeroni n cheese. that will come when it’s ready to, ripe and falling off the vine. maybe early autumn? always something to look forward to.
in other mis news,
a recent text exchange, with davis:
Lindsey made enchiladas for dinner. i love her. thank goodness.
i am missing my sweetheart. i feel lucky to.
i am listening to Precious Gems.
i am glad you’re here.
i am thinking about this essay that clara sent me, by Fargo Nissim Tbakhi - Notes on Craft: Writing in the Hour of Genocide
about the line “This is what life looks like. This is something we can do with spoons.”
about the phrase “a soil and not an hour”
